‘They say we’re alive but I don’t think that we are’ – BBC Africa

More than 60,000 people have fled the conflict in Ethiopiaโ€™s Tigray region to seek refuge in neighbouring Sudan.

Some of them have become refugees for the second time in less than 30 years.

This is a tale of 70-year-old Gebregziabher Haileslasie – who returned to the Um-raquba refugee camp which he left 27 years ago – and Mulgeta Berhe, who has returned to the Tunyadbah refugee camp in Sudan where he was born and raised.

    1. This video has been corrected to reflect that Mulgeta Berheโ€™s parents fled Ethiopia during the military rule in the 1970s, and not the 1980s.

    2. its so unfair with these wars it seems conected and the poverty and cruelty and traficking amd the curupt world why has noone noticed these people and demanded they be given new homes and their land back ? what is going on i thought the world was getting better i obviously got that wrong. People are not born to suffer they have human rights. people cannot carry on allowing this its a disgrace i am ashamed of my life for living when these people have not the same as me, they are not bad wrong or anything other than the innocent vicitims of a industry that manufactors war money and weapons of unkindness creating illness disease and crime that involves some of the most sick history it has to be stopped

    3. More negative , depressing and destructive information from out of Africa these Europeans are so oppressed and obsessed with showcasing the world the negative parts of Africa somebody help me form a documentary company that shows good stuff happening in Africa please.

    4. I am sorry really sorry. Blame the TPLF for all this chaos.

    5. Ethiopia & Eritrea & Afghanistan & Somalia are all equal๐Ÿ’”

    7. What goes around comes around.

    8. They are also talking about current genocide taking place under Abi leadership in 2021

    9. Ohhh my God. My heart is bleeding for my people๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”. TPLF is the cause for all this mess. They added other problems to the poor people. They are evils living in this world. They are the main problems of the Tigray people. I know the offensive by the Ethiopian government caused a very bloodish war. But TPLF was provoking the central government. Believe me, TPLF leaders are and will pay the price for all the mess they added to the poor TEGARU! And seek justice from the Ethiopian government and the world for those who were involved in rape and genocide.

Love, peace, and happiness for all Tegarus and Ethiopians.๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡นโคโคโค

    17. You could be semi live

    18. Imagine becoming a REFUGEE for the 3rd /2nd time in your life. the government of Ethiopia in various eras has been using the people of Tigray !!! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›

    19. This is so sad ๐Ÿ˜ž. Look how broken Gab looked as he told the story.

    20. Tigreys are not victimz coz u guys when u were rolled Ethiopia u remember wharmt u did in South Sudan and Somalia

So now it's u turn no mercy for Tigrey ๐Ÿ‘Ž

    21. I never heard of churches being burnt! Also, the tplf is to blame because they attacked the federal government first so maybe these refugees should blame their criminal tplf for their situation. Tigray people have a choice to make: support their federal government for a United prosperous Ethiopia and be part of the future OR support the criminal clique tplf and face the consequences!

    22. Why tigries always rebel the against central gov pls learn to respect like the other regions in Ethiopia .

    23. ๐Ÿ™โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ’›some people think it's funny when others are like this people won't understand until their in the same situation.. pray for tigray

    24. Heartbreaking indeed๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข

    25. ๐Ÿ’”โ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

    26. Restore the monarchy of Ethiopia.

    27. "The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses."
      (Malcolm X)

    28. African Nobel peace prize winner ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

    29. ethiopia is cursed country since AMHARA IS THERE

    30. โ€˜ churches werenโ€™t burnt… our brothers were slaughtered.โ€™ Makes sense! They orchestrate โ€˜Tribal warsโ€™ but thereโ€™s always rules to abide by.

    31. How sad ๐Ÿ˜ข
      Much love from Australia โค

    32. It hurts to see this helpless people!!!
But, this allegations have been accelerated deliberately by TPLF, the looting mafia Front. For some reason BBC is collaborating with the TPLF.
      Shame on BBC!

Everytime when an African country finds a good leader, who loves his people and isn't corrupt, Muzungu's propaganda machine starts badmouthing him.
This is happening now with PM Abiy Ahmed!

    33. What a lie …. so they live in Tigray when they are on power and they fled when Ethiopia changes for the better for the rest of the Country but Tigers ….. wow some of them are a killer's for 27 years now they play they are a victim's is laughable ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค

    34. We African have been somehow blinded by ourselves. We can't blame anyone a part from ourselves. Look at almost all the poorest African countries they all have the similar problem. And when we look at the in-dept other continents are the root of the problem because they know thatour leader can exchange their people for money. Ethiopia has a large scale of land that can nourish all the population but see how hungry the citizens are. We have the same problem in Western (Mali) if we stop listening to others exchanging ourselves for money to other continents we'll grow better than any continent. This is heartbreaking and makes me sad to see this. A kid who grows up in this situation can never have good mindset for better future. They will only have a thirsty blood of revenge and that's what add wood in fire there will never be a peace in this territory. If we don't unite amongst us no one else can and will do it for us. May Allah bring peace in any country suffering from war in the world. ๐Ÿ™

    35. When would we stop fighting? Africa. When would we live in peace and harmony? When will our tears be dried up?Why do we kill and displace ourselves? Where is our togetherness? Why can't we stop fighting . From Ethiopia to Mali, from Nigeria to Congo, from Sudan to South Africa. We need peace. O My Lord grant us peace and love, grant us togetherness and harmony, surely Only THOU can help us.๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Love for all, hatred for none. With love from Nigeria.

    36. Extremely sad .

    37. My heart are breaking for them! I would really really want to help, ist there a way to send them money or anything directly? I dont know if money would help but if it would I would want to send them money every month! I dont have much, I was homeless for a long time but now that I have a home I want to help! If someone knows how to help please write me!

    38. Regardless where you live on this Earth.

    39. Lol at the comments. Don't realize this shit can happen to you anytime. Facts

    40. This is extremely hurt Breaking. Ethiopians are my distant relatives and they are great and loving people. Does someone really care like me?? Ethiopian regime please stop killing and displacing innocent people.

    41. Idris Elba has fallen on some hard time.
